I recently came across a forum thread that grated on me, but I'm too lazy to sign up just to post an answer, so I think I'll just whine at it from over here.

@krolitika_009: I think that's SMeyer after-thought. She realized that people had said that Jessica was actually nice, so tried to change their perspective through revealing what's really in her mind.
Now, imagine this. You're a new kid in school. Then, a girl approach you and sat with you through two classes. You probably would strive a conversation with her, or at least remember her name. But this wasn't the case with Bella. I quote;
"I couldn't remember her name, so I smiled and nodded as she prattled about teachers and classes. I didn't try to keep up."
She didn't try to keep up. She couldn't remember her name. She was not being nice! There Jessica was, a girl who was trying to have a conversation, and she couldn't care less.

Thank you for pointing this out!
It;s true, Bella is nothing but a dull, moody, winy baby who takes avantage of others and only has room for a guy whos been dead for over 100 years. I always thought that Jessica was annoying, but now that you mentioned it she was acutally trying to make Bella feel more comfortable at school and letting her be her friend, but what does Bella do? treat her and the others like CRAP!! I would have been grateful to have a friend like Jessica and join her circle of friends. That just goes to show how ungrateful Bella is with her life.

My response:
>>I would have been grateful to have a friend like Jessica and join her circle of friends. That just goes to show how ungrateful Bella is with her life.<< I know I have absolutely no right to involve myself with this discussion, as I haven't read Twilight (or most popular works of fiction, for that matter), but that remark makes me squirm a bit. I don't like to consider myself a bad person for reacting to people in a way similar to this character as quoted/described in this thread. When I'm new in a place and someone randomly comes up and starts socializing at me, I have a pure fight-or-flight reaction but the tact not to do either...so it's basically a torture session for me and I often come to resent the person for draining me of my time and energy just so they can feel like my heroic rescuers from solitude. And if they start touching me, like patting me on the arm at intervals, I am literally immobilized with adrenaline. I have to take a step back and remind myself that they honestly think that they're being nice. And darned if I remember their names or even their faces by the end of the day unless there's something very unique about them. Unbelievably enough, a lot of people at my university actually seem to know and like me...and yes, I do sometimes feel guilty for not knowing which extrovert I'm tasked with saying hello to with a fake smile plastered on my face this time. I do have a few people I can handle, but they are few and far between, and even in those cases our communication is sporadic. (On a note related to an earlier post in this thread, there's a fair chance I would grieve for quite some time if one of those precious few "dumped" me outright rather than gradually distancing themselves. My brain doesn't perceive the flow of time very well with regard to high-stress events of that nature, and because they've actually earned my trust and respect, losing one of them would sting like nothing in the world. In some ways it would be similar to grieving a death, but with the complication of being a direct, deliberate response to me in particular.) Would I make a detestable fictional character? Most likely. Is there something seriously wrong with me? Possibly. Would I rather be as likable to people similar to this Jessica on the inside as I apparently am on the outside? No, I'd rather like myself. Because I do like myself at the moment. I have many rationalizations for my behavior that make me feel as warm and fuzzy as you please: Autistic; schizoid; too smart to have to be a captive audience for loud, emotion-saturated rambling about topics I cannot force myself to care about; I owe nothing to people I never invited within my fragile boundaries; if they won't leave me in peace, they deserve my evil, wicked attempts to escape their reach.
So yeah, maybe this Bella and I can be dull, moody, whiny characters together. Woo!
...Of course, any of this could be written well or poorly. I've never sat down to read the Twilight narrator's portrayal for myself.
